John Akomfrah Filmmaker

From Ousmane Sembene's ground breaking Black Girl (1966) through Horace Ove's
A Hole In Babylon (1978) to Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep (1977) - for over
four decades - Black filmmakers have sought to work in a third space between documentary and
fiction in a search for a Black Aesthetic. John Akomfrah: Handsworth Songs (1986), Riot (1999),
Call of Mist (1998) will
discuss these filmmaking traditions and their specific contributions to the genre.
