From Ousmane Sembene's ground breaking Black Girl (1966) through Horace Ove's A Hole In Babylon (1978) to Charles Burnett's Killer of Sheep (1977) - for over four decades - Black filmmakers have sought to work in a third space between documentary and fiction in a search for a Black Aesthetic. John Akomfrah: Handsworth Songs (1986), Riot (1999), Call of Mist (1998) will discuss these filmmaking traditions and their specific contributions to the genre.

Ed and Mark will speak frankly about the process of making docu-drama for television, using selected clips from their productions The Year London Blew Up (2005) and Last Years Of The Raj (2007). They will address the different issues raised when making docu-drama that 'brings recent history to life' and those that 'give insight into inaccessible situations'.

Both Hill and Woolcock employ highly innovative styles in their work, from musical performance to entirely improvised scenes with people re-enacting their experiences. Showing excerpts from their own work Tina goes Shopping (1999), Exodus (2007), Drinking for England (1998) and Songbirds (2005), they will demonstrate how and why they ask real people to perform in their films.

Renowned documentary director Nick Broomfield takes to the stage to discuss the unconventional production method he has adopted for making factual drama. Showing sequences from his latest film Battle For Haditha (2007) and Ghosts (2006), he will discuss how he aims to achieve a greater authenticity by shooting in documentary style and using non-professionals who have experienced similar situations to the characters they play.
